Introduction

The following interview with Mrs. Freda Magnus was recorded on July 22, 1982 at her home in Southfield, Michigan. The interviewer is Arthur Kirsch.

Freda...

Okay.

Uh, where and when were you born?

I am in March 1917 in Poland--in Łódź.

In Łódź.

Yes.

Uh, what was your father's occupation?

We had a business--we used to have a deli.

In Łódź?

Yeah. We made--we work--we made the salamis, you know, all the deli things we produced by ourselves in the factory.

So it was like a wholesale place, you would...

A wholesale yeah, and, and that, and resale. Wholesale we had and then we had three stores where we did sold and so uh, it was, you know, all right. We hadn't been ???.

Was it, was it--were you considered a kosher deli?

Yeah, kosher, oh sure. Everything is was kosher.

We had been religious people.

Oh, yeah.
