Life with the Third Reich

All right, so, so let me just recap. You went to Żarki...

Yeah.

...and then...

And a few weeks la...a few days later rumors uh, słuchy that they're going to deport the people from Żarki. So the ones they could--they did the same thing, it was ??? and the others they took uh, they ran like we did, back to our city. We thought here it's quiet already. So we got, we got in the ghetto. There was a handful of people, very few. One find out this one doesn't live, and this one, and then we knew--find out about this letter from, from this girl. It came to the mayor from the city that she told her story, how--what happened to those people on those trucks. That's how I know. We were uh, in--yeah, and by the way, have you heard of the Third Reich? We--between us and the Third Reich was uh, probably a couple miles by the front--the border. We, we were not supposed to be--you know, we're--you have to carry identification at all time. Even, in spite of the yellow uh, Mo...the Star of David, you had to have i...identification of where you're from. We're not supposed to be in the Third Reich. My sister--married sister was in the Third Reich. We were--I don't know what it's called--the General Government. That's what called in German. I, I wouldn't know what, what it is here.

What, what, what, what was his job?

No, no. I mean, the, the border...

Uh huh. PK:...the war--during the war...

Okay, right. Okay.

uh, uh, like part belonged to the Third Reich--???--Third Reich, yes. And the other, the other part is--was the General Government. I don't know what...

Husband: They split up, uh...

They split up the Polacks, like um...

Oh, they made different districts.

Districts...

Husband: ???

...districts yes, and it was a border, strictly. You couldn't get there. So we had different identifications in that--from the Third Reich had different identifications. So we came back here, we didn't know. So you know from, from the Żarki. So we stayed there about a few weeks, they said, before long, we, we be gone too. And then it started it up, they said, now they're going to take care of us--the rest. So we, we run again.
