Were they Hungarians?
Hungarians, yes. And I had, I--everyday I went and I had to listen and, and the screaming and the, the how they were beating up people. Uh, some people were, you know, wealthier. Like, like here, some people probably put away some money someplace for some, uh, see there uh, they had to make the daughter's dowry, linen and everything and they put away and uh, somebody reported. It was always some collaborator who reported. And they were beating up those people that I had to hold my ears, I couldn't listen how those people...
In the jail?
No, it wasn't jail. It was the...
In the...
...rooms where I was cleaning...
...in the police station.
...and when they took them out, I had to clean up the blood after them. And uh, specially when I knew who they took. Some they beat to death with a gun and with those--they had those uh, rubber, you know. And I went there the whole time to clean for job they give me some little bread crumbs for a little--we didn't eat that time not kosher. But uh, for better cleaning they--there were some uh, probably they give me piece of bread or something. So I took for my mother and my sister. I saw once--I knew that people, they were from Sobrance--the girl and they had a bag. And uh, some Gentile people, they brought uh, once for us a package too, but they didn't let it in. Like bread and food. So somebody brought a package for them and I was going there to clean. See at least I could walk around because I had to go there to clean. It was by the uh, entrance. And uh, the police saw that he took the package and I tell you they were kicking him and, and, and with a gun and--it's unbelievable. So that was--we were there 'til Shavout in the ghetto. In ghetto they didn't do nothing to us really uh, maybe they raped some uh, women or girls. They took us to clean some houses in the city or somethings. They picked--they mostly picked always uh, who is stronger and, and uh, blonde and with blue eyes.
