Lisa Kallai - January 28, 2008

Introduction

Can you tell me your name please and where you were born?

My name now is Lisa Kallai and I was born in Vienna.

And your maiden name?

Weitzman.

Uh, but you wound up in Czechoslovakia.

I wound up in Czechoslovakia because my maternal grandparents lived in Czechoslovakia. So, after the Anschluß I was smuggled out to Czechoslovakia.

Oh, I see. Do you remember anything about Vienna before the war?

Yes, of course, I was twelve years old when I left.

Ah. How large was your family?

I'm an only child.

So, you...

My father had a large family but I'm an only child.

And all, all from Vienna?

My father's family lived in Vienna, yes.

Um, were your parents very Viennese?

No, no, not Vien...not very. My father was born in Poland and my mother was born in Czechoslovakia. They lived in Vienna but...

Uh...

They were central European.
